“Being a part of this mosaic, and the one at the Palliative Care Centre, makes me really proud. You can’t see it when you’re working on your individual piece, but when it all gets put together, it is beautiful. These projects mean something to me- working on something together that contributes to the community. They’ll be here after I’m gone, and they look beautiful.” – Diane, long-time Creative Space Participant and 2770 resident .
I was struck by the reaction of Diane when she saw the finished product of a mosaic that she had been working on with other Creative Space participants last year. Her beautiful thoughts made me think about the bigger picture that we are all a part of. No one knows just how they are contributing to the mosaic of life all around us- we’re all just working in a small patch and hoping that we are making a difference, but Diane’s thoughts challenged me to have more faith in what we do.
We can’t always see the bigger picture, but we know it is there. We know that we are working alongside others, and that together, we are creating something beautiful. Sometimes we are lucky enough to catch glimpses along the way. We should look out for those moments, appreciate them, and store them in our hearts to ponder when our contribution doesn’t feel like much. For, as Diane said, our contributions will be making a difference long after we are gone.
